Nature: Expectations vs. Reality

How many people, given the opportunity, would willingly spend a weekend in the wilds of nature? For most of us, Nature is an escape from concrete jungles and pollution. But how often do we reflect on what that means in terms of culture and specifics. If you think of nature as a place where everything is perfect, then We’ve got some bad news for you: Nature is not the ideal. And, while that may sound really difficult to digest, take it from us — our expectations make all the difference in the world. As a society, we’re  constantly trying to outsmart nature and come up with ways to circumstances its harshness.

Nature can be a beautiful thing. There are few places on Earth as exhilarating as their counterparts in the wild. But Nature is not all sunshine, flowers, and ripe berries.

A recent study found that at least a third of Americans have an unrealistic view of nature and some people even see it as 'safe' - despite it being the source of countless natural disasters.

The Study:

The study was done by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (peta.org) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (ifaw.org) and was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics, which also stated that it wasn't a "study". It relied on 452 people (so sample size) with an age range of 18-65. The subjects were asked if they had positive or negative responses to nature that were realistic (i.e. animals being cute, flora smelling good) or unrealistic (i.e. animals being tame, flora growing in soil).

The study found that at least a third of Americans have an unrealistic view of nature and some even see it as "safe" - despite it being the source of countless natural disasters.

Study Methods: Responses were taken from the 452 people and then put into categories to see if they were more realistic or unrealistic. The results showed only a third were realistic, while two-thirds had one or more unrealistic views of nature.

So hope everyone understands, nature isn't always sunshine, greenery and flowers. Stay home Stay safe...
